Sugar Land was home to major sugar producer Imperial Sugar from 1843 until the refinery closed in 2003, hence how the city got its name. Sugar Land is served by Fort Bend Independent School District and has one of the highest concentrations of top-ranked public schools in Texas. Three FBISD high schools- Dulles, Clements, and Austin High were ranked among the top 1,000 schools in the country by Newsweek in 2009.
